Why do teeth appear yellower/darker in color?
Many factors contribute to the yellowing of teeth the most pronounced being diet and age. The surface layer of the teeth have a layer of enamel which protects the teeth but as we get older tiny micro cracks develop and allow stain and debris to be trapped leading to a darker color.
How does whitening work?
Bleaching is a process where your teeth are whitened by using peroxide based products. The peroxide penetrates the enamel and essentially draws the stains out of the micro cracks leading to whiter colored teeth. There are two methods of bleaching. One is done in about an hour in office or the other method is where we make you a custom tray and you can bleach in the comfort of your home.
What are the complications?
The main complications are sensitivity to cold and irritation to the gums. White spots known as fluorosis may become more visible with the process.
